8U Registration

2019- 2020 8U Hockey Program (Mites)

8U Hockey (Birth Years 2011 and younger) is the State College Youth Ice Hockey Association's entry point into organized hockey on a team.  At this age level the players are grouped together into teams based off of their ability level and play jamborees against other organizations' teams that are of a similar ability.  Jamboree games are played cross-ice and with 3 skaters and a goalie to allow players to be creative and get additional opportunities to handle the puck.  During the season, the weekly SCYIHA practice is exclusively skill based and designed to encourage the players to develop the foundational skills needed to excel as they progress in hockey.

At this age level we try to limit the amount of travel required (games normally limited to the Central PA region:  Altoona, Johnstown, etc) as well as limit the number of games played.  For example, at 8U we limit the number of jamborees to 5-7, where at the 10U level, teams have in the 20+ game range.

The 8U program is a great introduction for players and families to travel hockey.  The goal of the program is to provide players an opportunity to play organized hockey and to prepare them to continue playing the game at older age levels.  Ultimately, the 8U program is designed to lay the foundation needed to get players to have a lifetime love of the game.

Any questions about the SCYIHA program should be directed to the 8U Coordinator:  Ryan Patrick (rap176@psu.edu)
