USA Hockey Coaching Certification

USA Hockey and the Coaching Education Program require both certification and registration to be eligible to coach. Registration is done online on a yearly basis. Certification is also required.

All USA Hockey Requirements must be completed before participating in any team activities.

All fees associated are reimbursable for our staff. Please send your receipts to scyiha.treasurer for reimbursement.

Steps to Become a SCYIHA Coach

All coaches are responsible for being up-to-date with all USA Hockey coaching requirements. To check your status, visit your coaching profile on the USA Hockey website.

Team Managers are only required to complete Steps 1-3.

Step one

Register as a member of USA Hockey. 

Cost is $52 plus any affiliate fees if applicable. This fee will be reimbursed by the program upon submission of expense report.

Step two (4 parts)

Complete the background screenings. 

This is done securely through the National Screening Program. NCSI began working with USA Hockey in April 2020.

Cost is $30 plus any affiliate fees if applicable. This fee will be reimbursed by the program upon submission of expense report.

Complete PA specific background screening

 PA ACT 153 ACT 15 (2015)

All volunteers in PA must satisfy the requirements of PA ACT 15 for child abuse screening/criminal background check. Clearances good for 60 months. See the below links to obtain your PA ACT 153 clearances.

Step three

Complete the USA Hockey Safe Sport Training. 

This is required every year and you cannot be added to a roster until completed.

Step four

Complete the online age-specific module(s) for the age level of play you are coaching. 

Cost is $10 per module and only needs to be completed once per age level. This fee will be reimbursed by the program upon submission of expense report.

Modules must be completed prior to participating in any team activities. You cannot be added to a roster until completed.

Step five

Find, register and attend the required certification clinic. The Cost is $55. This fee will be reimbursed by the program upon submission of expense report.

You can only attend one clinic per season and all coaches start at Level 1. You can take clinics from April 1-Dec. 31 each season. Click here to locate a clinic.
